Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about getting ready for Halloween and fall festivals. Costumes, masks and makeup are a big part of celebrating this time of year, so be sure your costume doesn’t leave you uncomfortable or mess up your skin.

Dr. Sarah Weitzul, a dermatologist at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says if you or your children wear makeup as part of your costume, you should wash it off as soon as you get home to avoid skin irritation. Water-based makeup is much easier to remove, and those who have acne or oily skin should avoid greasepaint makeup. Stick with products designed to be used on the skin and avoid homemade concoctions, such as those involving cooking oil and food coloring. Make sure masks and costumes don’t fit too tight, rub or chafe. That can lead to an itchy rash the day after the event. Also make sure masks and costumes don’t rub color off onto the skin.
