Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about being smart about your heart. Managing high blood pressure is crucial for lowering your risk for heart disease, but that can sometimes be a complex regimen that’s hard to keep up with.

Dr. Joseph Ravenell, a blood pressure expert at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says you should talk to your doctor if you’re having trouble sticking with your treatment plan, whether because the medicine is too expensive or because you don’t like the side effects. There are a lot of medications available, and one might work better for you. Remind yourself to take medicine by keeping it visible, using a pill organizer, sticking to a schedule and putting reminders into your computer, cell phone or PDA so you won’t forget.
