Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’ve been talking about traveling while pregnant. Travel is safe for healthy pregnant women, as long as they take certain precautions to prevent such complications as deep vein blood clots in the legs. Meanwhile, maintaining your health while traveling is also important.

Dr. Robyn Horsager-Boehrer, an obstetrician at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says pregnancy is no time to start rigorous exercise or a strict diet — which means it’s not wise to try extreme activity while traveling if you’re not already in shape. However, moderate, regular exercise is recommended, and it can help you prevent blood clots while traveling. A sensible diet is also recommended, with regular, balanced meals and even the occasional treat, as long as your blood sugar is under control.
