Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about traveling while pregnant. Pregnancy doesn’t mean staying close to home, as long as you’re healthy, but there may be extra precautions to take when going on a cruise or traveling abroad.

Dr. Robyn Horsager-Boehrer, an obstetrician at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says you need to check on any vaccinations you’ll need at your destination or ports of call and if those vaccinations are safe for pregnant women. You should also make sure there will be a health care provider on board the cruise ship or at destination spots. Before you travel, get a copy of your prenatal records from your doctor so you’ll have them handy in case you need medical attention while traveling.

Next: Diet and exercise for pregnant women on the go.
