Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about working with your doctor to manage your health. Previously, we discussed the information you need to bring with you to medical appointments. But it’s also good to keep some medical information with you at all times.

Dr. Raymond Fowler, an emergency physician at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says you can help ensure you get better care in case of emergency if you carry key medical information with you. Keep an information sheet in your wallet or perhaps stored on your cell phone that includes your blood type, any ongoing medical conditions, any allergies or drug reactions, the medications you’re taking, vaccinations you’ve had, organ donor status and contact information for your primary care physician. In an emergency, seconds count, and having this crucial information available will help emergency personnel give you faster, better treatment.
