Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

Your doctor may be the one with extensive training in health care, but you also play a big role in managing your health. Think of yourself and your doctor as a team working together to make sure your health is the best it can be. This week on Health Watch, we’ll talk about some ways you can manage your health.

When you need to visit the doctor, some prior planning can help you make the most of your visit. Dr. Shelley Roaten Jr., chairman of family and community medicine at
UT Southwestern Medical Center, says you should think about and even write down your main concerns before you visit the doctor. That way you’ll remember to ask the right questions. Share these concerns at the beginning of your visit, because that may influence the way the doctor examines you. Also bring a list of every medicine you take, as well as over-the-counter drugs, vitamins or supplements. The doctor needs to know this to treat you properly.
