Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about going outside to enjoy the warm spring weather. When you’re planning your spring and summer wardrobe, make sure to include one important accessory: a pair of sunglasses.

Dr. V. Vinod Mootha, an ophthalmologist at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says both adults and children should wear sunglasses when they’re out in the sun to protect their eyes from damage caused by ultraviolet radiation. Exposure to ultraviolet rays damages the cornea and surface of the eye and can increase the risk for such problems as some kinds of cataracts and macular degeneration. UVB radiation is highest around noon on sunny days and on low-ozone days. Look for shades or eyeglasses with polycarbonate lenses that protect against UVB radiation.
