Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about treating yourself with over-the-counter medications. With spring just around the corner, the allergy season isn’t too far away. Allergy symptoms can be treated with over-the-counter drugs, but you need to choose medications carefully.

Antihistamines help relieve runny noses, sneezing and itching but don’t help with stuffiness. Decongestants relieve congestion and sinus pressure. You may have to try different medications or combinations to find what works best for you without causing side effects. Dr. David Khan, an allergy expert at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says if you don’t find relief from over-the-counter drugs, you should see a doctor because there are prescription medications that may be more effective.
