Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about Valentine’s Day. While you’re letting all those red hearts you see in Valentine decor remind you of your own heart health, take a moment to consider the health of your community, as well — and what you can do about it.

Dr. Paul Pepe, chairman of emergency medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says the community is often the weak link in treating heart attacks. Even with advanced emergency response systems, the first few minutes after a heart attack — usually before help can arrive — are the most crucial, and that’s where bystanders trained in CPR can make a life-or-death difference. For your Valentine’s Day gift to the community, consider getting trained in CPR — or better yet, organizing a training session at your church, community group or office.
