Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

Valentine’s Day is coming soon, and stores are full of red heart decorations, romantic gifts and chocolate treats. This week on Health Watch, we’ll talk about some Valentine’s Day-related topics.

Those heart decorations are a good reminder to think about your own heart health. Doctors at UT Southwestern Medical Center say diet, exercise and risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure and obesity are the main things to worry about when it comes to having a healthy heart. Dr. James De Lemos, a UT Southwestern cardiologist, says having a high-pressure job and a busy life are less likely to cause heart problems — in fact, busy people in important jobs are often better at scheduling time for exercise, which helps them keep their hearts healthy. Give a Valentine’s Day gift to your heart of exercise and a nutritious, low-fat diet.
