Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.
This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about staying safe and healthy so you can enjoy the holiday season. The last place you want to spend a holiday is in the emergency room. That’s why doctors at UT Southwestern Medical Center recommend taking some precautions before having holiday guests or traveling to visit relatives.
Dr. Robert Wiebe, a pediatric emergency medicine specialist, says grandparents expecting visits from little ones need to childproof their homes. Make sure dangerous things such as poisons and sharp objects are locked out of reach of children. Cover electrical outlets, use cabinet locks and if you have a pool, make sure children can’t get to it. Medications should also be locked away instead of kept on nightstands or in purses, especially if you don’t use childproof containers. That also holds true if you’re visiting family members with kids and you carry medicine with you.
