This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about making your holiday decor safer for your family. There’s nothing like flickering candles to add a sense of warmth to your home. But these can be a hazard if you’re not careful.
Dr. Robert Wiebe, a pediatric emergency medicine expert, offers some tips for safe use of candles. Keep candles out of reach of children and where pets can’t knock them over. Dress children in flame-retardant clothing to reduce their risk of being burned. Don’t leave burning candles unattended. Scented oil lamps and air fresheners can also be dangerous, especially if they smell like food. Small children might try eating them, and that could lead to aspiration pneumonia. Keep these where children can’t reach them, and call a doctor if you suspect a child has eaten them.
