Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re offering some advice for parents to help them keep their kids safe and healthy. Parents may not be able to watch their children at all times, but it is a good idea to check out the environment where your children will be, especially if your children have allergies.

Day care centers can be a major source of indoor allergens. Dr. Rebecca Gruchalla, chief of allergy at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says if your children have allergies, you should look for a center that offers as sterile an environment as possible. Carpet may hold more dust mites than tile flooring, and any leaks can promote mold growth as well as attracting cockroaches. St. Augustine grass is best for outdoor play areas because it doesn’t pollinate. Other things to look for are indoor air filters and naptime mattresses that are encased in dust covers.
