This week on Health Watch, we’ve been talking about the face, how it ages, and how to stop the aging. There are medical interventions, but there’s also a lot you can do with proper skin care to slow the aging process for a face that looks younger longer.
Dr. Sarah Weitzul, a dermatologist at UT Southwestern Medical Center, suggests a sunblock and a retinoid as the first steps in anti-aging skin care. The next treatment you might want to use is a hydroxy acid such as glycolic acid, lactic acid or salicylic acid. These can stimulate collagen in the skin, among other benefits. Finally, you’ll want a product that contains anti-oxidants such as vitamins C and E. It’s also important to have a diet rich in these vitamins, which slow the aging process and help protect against cancer.
Dr. Weitzul says these products don’t have to be expensive. For the best advice on what your skin needs, visit a dermatologist instead of the cosmetics counter.
