Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about teaching kids about good nutrition and the importance of eating more fruits and vegetables. Summer is a good time of year to make a goal of eating more fruits and vegetables because they’re readily available and less expensive.

Cindy Cunningham, a registered dietitian at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says everyone needs at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Children just need smaller servings than adults do. To add fruits and vegetables to the menu, try topping breakfast cereal with sliced bananas or berries. Serve a fruit salad with lunch and grill vegetables with your meat for dinner. Fruit also makes a simple and nutritious dessert. You can also start the day with a glass of 100-percent juice — just check the label to make sure it’s real juice.

Next: Choosing the most powerful fruits and vegetables.
