This week on Health Watch, we’ve been talking about getting away from it all during summer vacation season. While a vacation is good for your mind and body, getting out of your good eating habits while you’ re traveling isn’t so good for your body. It’s especially hard when you’re on the road or having to get food in an airport and fast food is the only option.

Dr. Jo Ann Carson, a nutrition expert at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says fast food restaurants are now making it easier to eat right on the run. At many chains, you can get fruit, raw vegetables or salad as a side dish instead of fries. Most chains offer salads as meals, but be careful about the dressing. The packets of dressing they offer with salads provide enough dressing for several servings. Look for bottled water, fruit juice or low-fat milk as a beverage instead of sugary sodas. Fruit yogurt parfaits make a good snack or dessert.
