Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about getting away from it all during summer vacation season. Previously, we talked about how important it is to learn to manage stress. With today’s busy lives, it can be hard to find time to get away from it all, but if you’re that busy, you could really benefit from a vacation.

Dr. Ann Matt Maddrey, a psychologist at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says an escape from work and your everyday schedule is essential for mental health and creativity. You need to empty your mind occasionally so it’s ready for new things. If you get so stressed and busy that you don’t take time to recharge, your mind and body could run out of energy. When you take a break to recharge yourself, you’ll do a better job and have new ideas when you go back to work.

Next: Creative ways to take a vacation.
