Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about getting in shape for swimsuit season. While eating right and exercising are good for your health, it’s important not to let the way you look in a swimsuit affect the way you feel about yourself. That can not only affect your own self-image, but it can give children a skewed perspective that leads to unhealthy habits.

Lona Sandon, a registered dietitian at UT Southwestern Medical Center, suggests modeling good habits rather than talking about what you should be doing. If you have concerns about your weight, discuss them with a doctor or dietitian instead of sharing them with your family. Work exercise into your schedule as a family activity, and don’t use food as a reward or punishment.
