Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about getting in shape for swimsuit season. It takes more than just dieting to get your body lean and toned. Exercise is also important, but you need to use common sense. Don’t try to get all your exercise during the weekend, especially in summer heat.

Dr. Paul Pepe, chairman of emergency medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says emergency rooms often see young, active people with heat-related illness after they spend the week in air conditioned offices and then exercise intensely in summer heat during weekends.

To protect yourself, exercise in a ventilated area. Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeinated beverages and alcohol. Exercise with a buddy so you can keep an eye on each other.
