Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about health issues that concern seniors. Previously, we discussed how exercise can help prevent broken bones. Exercise may also help with another senior health concern — arthritis. Treatment programs for osteoarthritis may include exercise to strengthen muscles around affected joints and improve flexibility.

Dr. David Karp, chief of the division of rheumatic diseases at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says an arthritis exercise program may include strengthening exercises, cardiovascular exercise and specific arthritis-related exercises. Water exercise is popular for arthritis patients because it puts less weight on hip and knee joints. Talk to your doctor to get help finding a physical therapist who specializes in arthritis exercise.
