Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about sports and other activities for kids. It’s important for children to be physically active, but it’s also important to take steps to prevent injury. Bicycling is a popular outdoor activity, and it’s one that requires some safety precautions.

Dr. Luis Palacios, a sports medicine expert at UT Southwestern Medical Center and an avid cyclist, says proper fit is essential for preventing cycling injuries. You need to wear a bike helmet that fits properly, and you need to be sure your bike fits you. If a child’s bike has been in storage during the winter, the seat may need to be adjusted now if the child has grown. An improperly positioned seat puts a strain on the back, leg muscles and knees. A good bicycle shop can help you find the right-sized bike and adjust it properly.
