Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about problems that affect the nervous system. Previously, we discussed some of the early symptoms of multiple sclerosis. Once patients are diagnosed, they may have to make adjustments in their lives, but the adjustment could be as simple as rearranging their desks or their calendars.

Dr. Olaf Stuve, a neurologist at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says patients need to be aware of their limitations and that it may be more difficult to carry the same workload as the disease progresses. One of the main symptoms is fatigue, so accommodations such as having a desk where the patient doesn’t have to walk far or scheduling important tasks for the time of day when energy levels are highest may make a big difference. An ergonomically designed workspace can also help. Educating colleagues about the disease and its effects may help prevent frustration for everyone involved.
