This week on Health Watch, we're talking about the Dallas Heart Study, which is being conducted by doctors at UT Southwestern Medical Center. When it began, it was the first heart disease prevention study of a multi-ethnic population in a single metropolitan area. UT Southwestern recently received a large donation to help continue the study.
Doctors have interviewed and examined thousands of people to see how heart disease and risk factors affect the population. They hope to find ways to help prevent heart disease, as well as to learn what some of the barriers are that keep people from getting the care they need. One other thing the doctors have been able to do is to help these individuals with their health. The study has identified hundreds of people with high blood pressure who had no idea they might have a problem. There have also been study participants who turned out to have diabetes. Both of these conditions can contribute to heart disease.
