Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in American adults. Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have been conducting a long-term study to learn what factors affect heart disease and in what ways. The goal is to find preventable causes of heart disease.

Doctors took medical histories from more than 6,000 people who representing a cross-section of Dallas County residents, including women and members of various minority groups. More than half of these people had further tests, including blood tests and imaging studies of their hearts.

Now a new donation is allowing UT Southwestern doctors to continue the Dallas Heart Study in a new phase that will allow them to see how patients progress over time.

Next: What doctors learned from the study.
