This week on Health Watch, we're talking about health issues for women. Most women are aware that they need to take extra care with their health during pregnancy. Women who have diabetes need to be especially careful. Dr. Philip Raskin, a diabetes specialist at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, says high blood sugar can cause health problems for both mother and baby.

Babies exposed to high blood sugar are at higher risk for birth defects, premature delivery or large size that may make delivery difficult. Mothers may face the usual risks associated with diabetes, as well as higher blood pressure that could lead to seizure and stroke. Pregnant women with diabetes need to monitor their blood sugar levels, take medication as directed, eat a healthy diet and exercise.
