This week on Health Watch, we're talking about things you may need to think about as the holiday season comes to a close and the new year begins. During the cold and dark of winter, you may wish your skin had more of a sunny glow. Or you may be thinking about how you'll look in that slinky dress for New Year's Eve. Dermatologists at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas say you shouldn't turn to tanning beds to add color to your winter-white skin.
Dr. Stan Taylor, a UT Southwestern dermatologist and skin cancer expert, recommends sunless tanning products or bronzers. Dr. Taylor says ultraviolet radiation, whether from the sun or from sun lamps, can damage the DNA in skin cells, which raises the risk for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
