Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

We're talking about diabetes this week on Healthwatch. Type 2 diabetes, the kind that usually develops during adulthood, tends to come along with a variety of other health problems. Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas are studying the metabolic syndrome, which is a cluster of symptoms that may lead to problems like heart disease and diabetes. These symptoms include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, abdominal obesity and insulin resistance.

Dr. David Mangelsdorf, a UT Southwestern pharmacologist and biochemist, is focusing on a particular protein receptor that seems to be involved with this syndrome that may be the key to developing drugs that could treat metabolic syndrome. These drugs may help prevent diabetes, heart disease and other problems that develop due to metabolic syndrome.
