Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.
This week on Healthwatch, we've been talking about taking an active role in managing your health. You can monitor your vital statistics and get the right tests for early detection of disease. It's also important to make changes to your surroundings to help keep you healthy.
Dr. Rebecca Gruchalla, chief of allergy at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, says you can help manage your allergy symptoms by making a few simple changes. Install a Hepa air filter in your home to reduce the amount of allergens that remain airborne. Cover your mattresses in allergy-proof cases to reduce your exposure to dust mites. Have any water leaks repaired because water can foster mold. Carpet is more likely to attract allergens than tile flooring.
By taking an active role in managing your own health, you can help keep yourself healthier.
