Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.
This week on Healthwatch, we're going to talk about the body's command and control center: the brain and nervous system. Diseases and disorders that affect the brain and nervous system can affect physical health as well as mental health.
If you've started forgetting things more often lately, you may fear that you're developing Alzheimer's disease. But
Dr. Roger Rosenberg, director of the Alzheimer's Disease Center at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says memory loss doesn't always lead to Alzheimer's disease. Only about a third of people who suffer cognitive memory loss go on to develop Alzheimer's disease in the next few years.
There are other causes for memory loss, so it's important to get a medical evaluation if you notice signs of memory loss or impaired functioning in yourself or a loved one.
