We're talking about stress this week on Healthwatch. While we often think of hectic jobs when we think about stress, family needs are another source of stress, and this is especially true for those who have to care for an ill or disabled loved one.
Doctors at UT Southwestern Medical Center say caregivers need a little extra support from their friends and family to help them deal with the stress.
Dr. Elizabeth Paulk, a UT Southwestern doctor who specializes in treating patients with chronic illnesses, offers some ways to help caregivers.
First, ask how you can help, and try to be specific about what you offer to do, then follow through. Think about things you would appreciate if you were in that situation. If you ask caregivers how they're doing, be open to listening to the answer.
