This week on "Healthwatch" we're looking at children's health. One important health issue for children is dental health - something to remember during February, National Children's Dental Health Month. Children need to see the dentist at least twice a year, starting by the time baby teeth begin to emerge. Teeth and gums should be brushed with a soft toothbrush at least twice a day, especially before bedtime.
Oral surgeons at UT Southwestern Medical Center say there are other good oral health habits parents need to teach children. Teeth shouldn't be used as tools to open packages or tear off clothing tags. Crunching on ice and hard candy can also damage tooth enamel.
Starting good dental health habits at an early age can help ensure good dental health later in life.
Next on "Healthwatch": some important screening exams for children.
