Weakened bones make you more prone to fractures, which are a major cause of disability among the elderly.
A diet rich in calcium and regular exercise, including resistance training, are important for preventing osteoporosis. Doctors at UT Southwestern Medical Center say regular bone density tests starting at menopause are important for diagnosing osteoporosis and beginning more intensive treatment with medication to slow the loss of bone mass.
