Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on "Healthwatch," we're talking about preventive medicine - things you can do to protect your health. One thing that will increase your chances of staying active and healthy later in life is to prevent osteoporosis. Weakened bones make you more prone to fractures, which are a major cause of disability among the elderly.

A diet rich in calcium and regular exercise, including resistance training, are important for preventing osteoporosis. Doctors at UT Southwestern Medical Center say regular bone density tests starting at menopause are important for diagnosing osteoporosis and beginning more intensive treatment with medication to slow the loss of bone mass.

Next on "Healthwatch": Preventing and detecting prostate cancer.
