Information for Applicants to the UT Southwestern
Radiation Oncology Residency Program
We will begin reviewing applications for PGY-2 for 2008 in September 2006.  All applications must be made through ERAS and the National Resident Matching Program.  At this time, we have one position available, although we are applying to the ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) for two additional positions.  If the additional positions are granted by the deadline for the Match, we will be filling two PGY-2 positions.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. How many positions are available?   Please see above.  Our goal is to have two residents per PGY year, for a total of eight residents.
  2. Do you accept applications from Foreign Medical Graduates?   We accept and review applications from medical school graduates from all accredited medical and osteopathic schools.
  3. What about visas?   At this time we are only able to accept applications from candidates who are US citizens, permanent residents (green card holders), or J1 visa holders.
  4. What are your cut-offs for Step scores and GPA?   All applicants are evaluated on their individual merits.   We do not have predetermined levels for test scores or GPA.
  5. How many letters of recommendation do I need to provide?   We require three letters of recommendation as well as a Dean’s letter, all of which should be provided through ERAS.
  6. Can I send additional information, such as articles and PowerPoint presentations?   Please do not send any additional information unless specifically requested.  We will let you know if additional information is needed.
  7. Can I make a presentation when I interview, or come early to do a presentation?   Because not all applicants are able to spend extra time to give individual presentations, we are not able to offer the opportunity to some applicants to do presentations.  There is not sufficient time on the interview days for presentations.
  8. How many applicants will you be interviewing?   We anticipate interviewing 15–30 applicants, depending upon the number of positions we have available.
  9. When are the interviews?   We will hold all interviews on Saturdays.   We anticipate holding two or three interview sessions in December and January, although the final dates have not been determined yet.
  10. Do you offer internship positions?   What type of internship is acceptable?   Our radiation oncology residency begins with PGY-2, and we do not offer PGY-1 as part of our program.  The ACGME requirements for radiation oncology state the first year of postgraduate clinical training must be spent in internal medicine, family practice, OB/GYN, surgery or surgical specialties, pediatrics, a categorical radiation oncology year, or a transitional year program.
  11. Do you offer electives for medical students?   We offer four-week electives in radiation oncology through UT Southwestern.  You may e-mail our Residency Program Coordinator (Melinda.Collins@utsouthwestern.edu) for additional information.
  12. Where can I get more information about your program and radiation oncology residencies in general?   Please see the links to the left for information on educational objectives, conferences and lectures, the application process, and our residency manual.   You may also visit the ACGME at www.acgme.org .
  13. Who should I contact at UT Southwestern if I still have questions about your program?   Please e-mail any additional questions to our Residency Program Coordinator, Melinda Collins at Melinda.Collins@utsouthwestern.edu.
