The Multiple Sclerosis Program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas is principally dedicated to three major initiatives: (1) to provide comprehensive clinical care for patients with MS; (2) to establish Program participation in the international clinical trials network; and (3) to develop an advanced research program for the investigation into the underlying mechanisms that cause MS.

The basic philosophy of the clinical care mission focuses upon the whole patient in order to formulate a treatment plan based upon a multi disciplinary approach.  The clinical center is organized as a team model.  The members of the team consist of a neurologist team leader, clinical nurses, rehabilitation specialists, physical and occupational therapists, a neuro-psychologist and neuro-urologist, a neuro-ophthalmologist, a vertigo and eye movement specialist, neuroradiologists, social workers, and counselors.  New patient evaluations are coordinated by the Director of the MS Program.  A treatment plan is formulated with the major thrust focusing upon maximum ability and minimizing disability.

Family and patient education concerning the mechanism of disease, diagnosis, treatment, and new clinical trials in MS is considered paramount to the Program's success.  Such efforts are facilitated by close relations between the Program and the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
