Committee Members A list of current members of WISMAC can be accessed through quick link (at right). Visiting Professorship Each year WISMAC selects and hosts an outstanding female scientist/physician to visit UT Southwestern for a two-day professorship. The Southwestern Medical Foundation sponsors this event, which promotes the accomplishments of women in science and medicine and provides inspiration to our junior faculty and trainees. Our visiting professor meets with individuals and with diverse groups on campus and presents the University Lecture. Read about the upcoming and current honorees at this link to: Visiting Professorship. Learn about the Southwestern Medical Foundation at this link: Southwestern Medical Foundation. Theme Receptions/Symposia WISMAC has sponsored receptions on Promotion & Tenure in 1999, 2004 and 2007 and "Advancement of Women in the UT System” in 2000. We held a symposium in the spring of 2003 entitled “Hot Topics in Hormones and Health for Female Physicians and Scientists”. The topic in fall of 2005 was "Mapping Your Academic Career - How to Get Where You Want to Go" and in 2006 it was time management. Read about upcoming receptions/symposia at: Events: Women in Science and Medicine. Science Teacher Access to Resources at Southwestern (STARS) We collaborated with the STARS program in 2002, 2005, and 2007, to present a symposium on careers in science and medicine to science teachers and their selected female junior and high school students. Also in 2005 & 2006, WISMAC and STARS recruited students to represent UT Southwestern and sponsored a table at the career event called "Girl's Night Out" organized by the Alliance for Technology and Women. Mentoring and Networking Program Mentoring and networking is our initiative aimed at retaining female faculty. In 2003 we began recruiting senior female faculty to serve as mentors and we connected them with new female faculty. While mentoring and networking should be occurring routinely within each department, our program is specifically intended to supplement this with sources of information and support from a female outside the department. For information on this program, please contact the director, Dr. Carole Mendelson, via email: Carole.Mendelson@UTSoutwestern.edu Childcare WISMAC actively gathered information and presented a report encouraging the administration to develop an on-campus childcare facility. We are pleased that the administration made childcare a priority by constructing a new building and entering an agreement with UT Dallas Callier Center to provide child care and education for infants 6 weeks of age through kindergarten. Childcare under this agreement began in August of 2004. In addition we maintain a list of website links to daycare providers for children and seniors: Day Care for Children and Seniors. Campus Safety WISMAC has been actively involved in initiatives to improve campus safety because this is a major concern to women working in the evening and on weekends. We are pleased that in 2002 the North Campus was converted to an after-hours, locked-down facility with with access allowed by a university-issued identification badge (for details see: Security for North Campus). In late 2007 all buildings on south campus began to be locked after regular business hours, on weekends and holidays. Card readers are located at specific sites to allow access. Website This website was created and is maintained by WISMAC to provide useful information regarding women’s health, events, gender-related issues, funding opportunities, awards for women, daycare for children and seniors and public and private child education, etc. If you have any suggestions or information, which you would like to contribute to the Website, please contact our administrator who will bring it to our attention at WISMAC@utsouthwestern.edu.
