Human Herpes Virus-6 PCR

Description
PCR assay to detect virus that causes Roseola (exanthema subitum, sixth disease). A qualitative assay is performed initially. A quantitative assay is performed on bone marrow or blood when qualitative result is positive.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 72 hours of collection (48 hours for ACD).  

Bone Marrow: 1 mL whole blood in EDTA preferred. ACD is acceptable. Send specimen at room temperature or with cold pack (April - October).

Peripheral Blood:  1 mL bone marrow in EDTA preferred. ACD is acceptable. Send specimen at room temperature or with cold pack (April - October).

CSF:  1 mL,  send specimen frozen and on dry ice.

Rejection Criteria
Clotted peripheral blood or bone marrow. Thawed tissue or fluid specimen. Specimens drawn in heparin will be rejected due to heparin's inhibitory nature to Taq Polymerase.
