Test Name
Neuropathology Biopsy Consultation |
Description
Review of slides prepared by another laboratory, processing of fixed tissue for light or electron microscopy with interpretation, and/or preparation of special histological stains, immunohistochemical stains, or molecular studies on paraffin sections as indicated or requested (see separate listings for Electron Microscopy, Immunohistochemistry, or 1p/19q LOH; additional charges may apply). Faculty members in the Division of Neuropathology are experienced in the evaluation of central and peripheral nervous system tissues for neoplastic, infectious, inflammatory, demyelinating, degenerative, vascular, traumatic, metabolic, and developmental disorders. |
Performed
Monday - Friday. |

Turnaround Time
A written report is generally available within 3-14 days, depending upon the need for special studies, such as additional stains, immunohistochemistry, or electron microscopy. Upon request, a verbal preliminary report can be made by telephone within 24 hours of receipt for submitted stained slides. The final written report can be transmitted by fax to the referring physician(s) upon request. |

Specimen Requirements
For consultation on slides prepared by another laboratory: Stained slides appropriately identified with the name of the laboratory where prepared, and accession number. Representative paraffin block(s) should be included to avoid further delay in the event that additional stains are indicated. For processing of fixed biopsy tissue for light microscopy: Tissue in fixative (ideally, 10% neutral buffered formalin). Submit specimens from different biopsy sites in separate containers. Label each container with the patient's name and the biopsy site. For processing of fixed biopsy tissue for electron microscopy: Tissue in fixative (ideally 3% glutaraldehyde, or 10% neutral buffered formalin), cut into 1mm3 blocks. Submit specimens from different biopsy sites in separate containers. Label each container with the patient's name and the biopsy site. H&E-stained section(s), paraffin block(s), or both should also be submitted to aid in directing the diagnostic interpretation of ultrastructural findings. For immunohistochemical and other special stains: Paraffin blocks of fixed and processed tissue are preferred over unstained slides. A completed Neuropathology Requisition, including patient demographic information (date of birth or age, and sex), relevant clinical and laboratory test information, the anatomical source of the biopsy, and, if available, the outside pathologist's report, must be submitted with the specimen. Outside slides submitted for review are generally retained (for medicolegal and educational purposes); therefore, it is recommended that, if possible, "recuts" be submitted in place of original slides. Submitted paraffin blocks are returned. The specimen may be transported to the laboratory by courier, US mail, Federal Express, or other appropriate means. Containers and fixatives are available from the laboratory upon request. |
