Test Description
Test Name
Hematopathology Consultation
Description
We provide consultative services for diagnostic problems in bone marrow and lymph node pathology. Cytochemical stain, including myeloperoxidase and non-specific esterase can be performed if necessary. An array of Immunohistochemical stains for hematopoietic cell antigens is available (see separate listing for IMMUNOHISTOCHEMISTRY; additional charges may apply). Immunophenotyping by flow cytometry, cytogenetic analysis and molecular diagnostic studies are available if indicated for diagnosis or prognosis assessment; these studies generally require fresh tissue.
Performed
As requested.
Turnaround Time
Most diagnoses are rendered within 24 hours by telephone or fax. Reports are then mailed. If additional studies are required that will delay a final report, a telephone progress report will be made and an estimate of the time necessary to issue a final report will be provided.
Specimen Requirements
Send relevant slides and clinical history along with unstained slides and/or paraffin blocks in case additional stains are required. When blocks are sent, indicate the type of fixative. Blood and bone marrow smears for cytochemical studies must be air dried and unfixed. For immunocytochemical studies, smears must be desiccated shortly after preparation and maintained in a desiccator until they are stained.

The specimen requirement for immunophenotyping by flow cytometry, cytogenetic analysis and molecular diagnostic studies are listed elsewhere in the catalog.
