Description
|
Cytogenetic analysis of fetal blood obtained by cordocentesis to assess for the presence of constitutional (congenital) chromosome aberrations. |

Methodology
|
48- and 72-hour cultures with phytohemagglutinin, standard cytogenetic harvest, G-banding with trypsin-Wright stain. The chromosomes in 20 metaphase or prometaphase cells are counted, 5 cells are fully analyzed, and 2 are karyotyped. |

Specimen Requirements
|
1-2 mL aseptically collected blood in a pediatric green top, sodium heparin tube. DO NOT use lithium heparin tubes. Must be tested to verify fetal origin.
Note: Deliver to lab at room temperature within 24 hours. If collected over a weekend, call the laboratory to make arrangements for specimen delivery. May be refrigerated if not transported immediately. Do not freeze. Protect from heat or cold.

Rejection Criteria
|
Frozen, clotted, hemolyzed or grossly contaminated specimens. Incorrect anticoagulant used. |
