Description The Department of Pediatric Pathology is staffed by board-certified pediatric pathologists who are available for consultation and slide review regarding specimens that involve diseases of the fetus, infant and child, including evaluation of the placenta. Discussion of the case with one of the pediatric pathologists prior to submission of specimen is recommended.

The staff is also available to perform fetal and neonatal autopsies if the deceased patient is transported to Children's Medical Center and complete medical records are available for review prior to beginning the procedure. Prior consultation with and approval by a pediatric pathologist is required.

Additional charges may apply if immunostains are not provided.

Performed Surgical pathology consultation is performed Monday - Friday, 0800-1700. Autopsies performed 7 days a week.
Turnaround Time A complete surgical pathology slide consultation report should be available within 1-5 days depending upon the complexity of the case. An immediate phone report will be provided when indicated. A preliminary autopsy report will be provided by 3 days and a final report within 30 working days.
Specimen Requirements Special Instructions: All fetuses/infants, regardless of gestational age, require a witnessed autopsy permit signed by at least one parent that authorizes Children's Medical Center of Dallas to perform a postmortem examination. Any limitations must be listed on the permit. A complete clinical history must also be provided. The body/specimen should not be fixed prior to transport. The body should not be transported to Children's without prior approval by a pediatric pathologist. Transportation will be at the expense of the referring institution. A signed form authorizing subsequent release of the body to a mortuary is also required (except for fetuses less than 350 grams).
