| investigation. A four-year Physician Investigator Track with two and one-half years of basic laboratory research is available for selected trainees committed to a research career.
There are 99 persons who have been in our training program through June 2003. Twenty-two are in full-time academic positions at 12 medical schools. Two have served as Chairman of Departments of Medicine, four as Chiefs of Pulmonary Disease/Critical Care Divisions, and two as deans. In the last 12 years, ten of our fellows have entered academic medicine and 24 have chosen private practice on completion of their fellowship. A recent survey of our fellows trained over the last ten years asked them to rate their training on a 1-5 scale, with 5 being outstanding. The mean score was 4.83.
Over the past 13 years the first time pass rate for fellows taking the Pulmonary or Critical Care board exams has been over 95%. In the national ranking of hospitals excelling in Pulmonary Disease done by U.S. News and World Report in 1997, 1998 and 2003, the Pulmonary program at Parkland Hospital was ranked among the top 40 centers in the United States.
This year we will accept three first year fellows through the Medical Specialties Matching Program. Selection is based on academic performance, recommendations and a personal interview.
