Q: What shift are newer officers assigned to upon entering the department?
A: The new officer is assigned with a training officer for the duration of their training period. The new officer is usually temporarily assigned to the same shift and regular days off as their trainer. The duration of training, which can be several weeks in length, depends upon the position the new officer is assuming. Some positions require more extensive training than other positions.
After the officer successfully completes their training, they are assigned to a shift and placed on regular status. Shift assignments will depend upon the needs of the department. The officer may be assigned to ANY shift. The officer’s regular days off may be assigned to any day(s) through out the week.
Q: What are the current shift hours of operation?
A: Shift times overlap and are currently as follows:
- Days, 06:45am to 03:15pm
- Evening, 02:45pm to 11:15pm
- Night, 10:45pm to 07:15am
Q: Does the department operate with rotating shifts?
A: At this time, shifts do not rotate and are permanent unless there are legitimate needs to move an officer to another shift. Again, note that shift assignments will depend upon the needs of the department.
**NOTE: Consideration is being given to other types of shift hours and assignments that may be implemented and in effect sometime in the near future.
Q: Are there opportunities to work overtime assignments?
A: At this time, there are often opportunities to work overtime assignments but keep in mind, depending upon a number of factors; the frequency of overtime availability can often change.
Q: Will the department make accommodations for personnel attending college or other needs?
A: The department encourages our personnel to pursue higher education but in light of the general duties and expectations of our profession, we are placed into the position where we cannot guarantee anyone they’ll be assigned to a certain shift with certain days off for an indefinite period of time. Personnel pursuing higher education or personnel who have other special needs, are also subject to working overtime or other types of assignments depending upon the needs of the department.
The department makes a reasonable effort to work with any personnel on a case-by-case basis. We recognize that personnel often expend a significant amount of time, effort and expense to pursue their educational goals. However, it must be emphasized that personnel, who have special considerations, should carefully consider these issues before making a commitment to pursue a position with the department.
