The Administrative Office is composed of the Chief of Police, the Assistant Chief, and six civilian Administrative Personnel. This office is responsible for many of the daily administrative functions of the department, including but not limited to: record keeping, general planning, research, budget, personnel, and leadership.

The Field Operations Division of the University Police Department is comprised of police officers, guards, and telecommunications officers. Field Operations is broken down into three separate shifts that patrol property owned, leased, or otherwise under the control of the UT System or UT Southwestern. The sworn police officers actively enforce all traffic and state penal laws on University property. They also take a variety of offense reports, incident reports, and traffic accident reports while serving the campus community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The guards assist the police officers in providing security for the property, as well as by assisting the campus community. Each shift is supervised by a Police Sergeant and commanded by a Police Lieutenant.

The Patrol Division is the backbone of Field Operations and comprises our department's most visible uniformed personnel. Our department has three shifts, which are composed of both sworn and non-sworn uniformed personnel. Each shift has a ranking supervisor on duty to oversee the daily operations of the shift. These officers perform a variety of duties and answer all calls for service from the community. Officers typically patrol the buildings and grounds with vehicles, bicycles and on foot. However, some locations are fixed post assignments where an officer is assigned for public information assistance and/or extra security purposes.

The patrol division currently utilizes marked cruisers, bicycles and pick up trucks for patrol purposes. The department also has unmarked vehicles, which are primarily used for administrative or special assignment purposes.

The Bike Patrol unit is composed of patrol personnel from each shift who patrol the campus on specially designed mountain bikes. This unit enhances our patrol division's function by providing a police presence in many areas of the campus that are inaccessible to other types of patrol vehicles. The unit allows for increased visibility and contact with the public further helps to deter crime. Bike officers often have a faster response time to service calls than officers who are on foot or in a motorized patrol vehicle.

Criminal Investigations is a multi-function unit within the department. This unit consists of the Criminal Investigations Division ( CID ), Internal Affairs, Intelligence and the Crime Prevention Unit.

The Criminal Investigations Division is responsible for performing follow up investigations on reports initially taken by patrol officers. CID personnel follow up reports by contacting witnesses or other persons for further information about a case, prepare and file cases with the District Attorney’s Office, obtain warrants for searches or arrests, execute warrants, process crime scenes, interview suspects, witnesses or victims, and investigate case leads.

The Internal Affairs Unit conducts investigations relating to alleged complaints or misconduct against any of our officers. This unit reports it’s findings to the Chief of Police.

The Crime Prevention Unit is composed of officers that have attended a special school about crime prevention techniques. These officers are certified by T.C.L.E.O.S.E. as Crime Prevention Practitioners / Inspectors. These officers routinely perform educational seminars on a variety of subjects to educate the community about measures they can take to reduce their likelihood of becoming a victim of crime. For further information, check the Crime Prevention page of our site.

The Intelligence and The Special Response Team ( SRT ) was developed to deal with unusual events occurring on campus that require additional police personnel. This team responds to incidents such as large fires, organized protests, special events, or other types of critical incidents that would otherwise overwhelm normal police personnel staffing. Team members routinely practice and receive additional in-service training to maintain their readiness to deal with a variety of situations. This team is on call 24 hours a day and is deployed when needed by the Chief of Police.

The Access Control Division is composed of four civilian personnel, one of whom operates the badging station in the A Building (Visitor Information Center). This division is responsible for campus access control as well as the campus physical security infrastructure, including card readers, surveillance cameras, intrusion detection (burglary) systems, and emergency call boxes. Access Control employees coordinate with University personnel, architects, contractors, consultants, and others on the installation of security systems for new buildings on campus, and are also responsible for maintenance of the existing security infrastructure. The Access Control badging station in the Visitor's Center primarily issues ID badges to contractors, vendors, and guests who will be working on or visiting the campus, and can also issue replacement badges.
