Q: Where is the UT Southwestern Police Department located?
A: The University of Texas Southwestern Police Department is located on the south main campus of the university in the "S" building on the 2nd floor adjacent to the Skillern Student Union building.
Q: What is the UT Southwestern police officer’s authority?
A: UT Southwestern employs commissioned T.C.L.E.O.S.E. (Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education) certified peace officers or police officers that have the legal authority, power, privileges and immunities afforded to all state licensed law enforcement officers in the State of Texas. University police officers can legally arrest persons, execute search or arrest warrants and enforce traffic law in much the same manner as a municipal police officer.
Q: Can UT Southwestern police officers enforce the law off the university campus?
A: Yes. All UT Southwestern commissioned police officers are licensed and certified by T.C.L.E.O.S.E. and are recognized peace officers under Article 2.12 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure. Even though UT Southwestern police officers primarily patrol and operate on any property owned, leased or otherwise under the control of UT Southwestern, they are authorized to make arrests pursuant to the Texas Code of Criminal Procedures for crimes as defined by any applicable Texas law.
Q: Can I make a report over the telephone?
A: It depends upon the type of crime, incident or information you wish to report to the department. Some situations are best handled by having an officer dispatched to your location to contact you for more information concerning the situation at hand. In some cases, depending on the circumstances and type of report, the report can be taken over the telephone by an officer.
Q: Why does it sometimes take awhile for an officer to respond and take my report?
A: All calls received by the department are prioritized by urgency. Emergency calls are given higher priority than non-emergency calls. If the officer assigned to your patrol district is unavailable, depending upon the call priority and how long the district officer will be busy, the call will either be dispatched to another officer or held until your district officer is available. All calls are important and services will be rendered as soon as reasonably possible.
Q: If I had something stolen from campus, do I need to contact other police departments and report it as stolen to them as well?
A: No. In most cases, if the property in question is stolen from campus or property otherwise under the control of UT Southwestern, the UT Southwestern police department has jurisdiction in these cases. Therefore, it would not be necessary to report it to another outside police agency.
When you call to report property that has been stolen to the department, the officer will obtain a description of the stolen item. If you are able to provide enough information (such as make, model, serial number) we will be able to enter the item into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database. (NOTE the property in question must meet an established criteria BEFORE it can be entered into the NCIC database). This database contains records of stolen property from law enforcement agencies in all 50 states and provides officers with instant access to these records. Therefore, if other agencies were to recover your property, they can check the NCIC database and obtain the information that might help you get your property back.
