a. Salary

Salaries are increased at each level of training to remain competitive with other institutions in the region. Annual salary raises averaging 3 to 5 percent were implemented 13 of the last 14 years to adjust for the cost of living.

b. Insurance

Complete professional liability insurance is provided at no cost to all house staff. Health insurance is provided through the Texas Medical Association Major Medical Insurance Plan at substantially underwritten costs. Monthly premiums are $20 for single individuals and $82 for families. Dental insurance is also available at inexpensive premiums. Long-term disability insurance and a supplemental retirement program are provided through Parkland Health and Hospital System.

c. Library Access

The UT Southwestern Medical Library, on the UT Southwestern campus is one of the finest in the country. It is a modern, fully computerized facility with multimedia capabilities and serves as a resource library in the national Network of Libraries of Medicine. Each resident is provided with a free photocopying card for use in the library. A computer is also available in the Resident Room for literature searches, e-mail, etc.

d. Vacations

Residents receive two weeks of vacation and one week of educational leave per year (3 weeks total).

e. Perquisites

The department provides white coats and laundry service. Convenient parking is available at a cost of approximately $5 per month. Second-year residents are provided textbooks on PM&R and electrodiagnostic medicine. Third-and fourth-year residents receive a $350 educational allowance each year (for books, conferences, etc.).  The department reimburses for American Academy of PM&R membership dues.
