HealthSouth (Dallas) Rehabilitation Institute

HealthSouth is a free-standing rehabilitation hospital with 120 beds. Residents are responsible for 15 patients on the Spinal Cord Injury Service. The patient population on this service includes higher- level spinal-cord injury patients who require ventilatory assistance. This rotation is an excellent opportunity for learning complex pulmonary management for patients with spinal-cord injuries.

Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas

Presbyterian Hospital is a 700-bed private hospital with 25 rehabilitation beds. Residents are in charge of 10-15 patients with similar responsibilities as on other inpatient rotations, and they also follow a few patients in a subacute rehab unit. This rotation provides a unique look at the private-practice model of inpatient rehab management. Close supervision by a private-practice physician allows the resident to learn issues of coding, billing, collections, and practice management.

Other learning opportunities include optional participation in a rheumatology clinic and Parkinson's disease rehab clinic.

Texas Sports Medicine Group

Residents participate in a two-month rotation through Texas Sports Medicine Group, a private orthopaedic practice, during the senior year. The resident participates in on-field sports event coverage and is exposed to different areas of sports and musculoskeletal medicine. Opportunities for assisting with surgical interventions is also available during this rotation. Patients are followed in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
