Hospitals and Facilities
Parkland Health and Hospital System

Parkland Hospital is a 940-bed health care facility adjacent to the campus of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Operated by the Dallas County Hospital District, Parkland is the primary teaching hospital for Southwestern Medical School and is also charged with the provision of medical care for the indigent population of Dallas County. Parkland is a major emergency and research facility and offers a full range of medical services to the community. It was the first hospital in Texas to be designated a Level 1 trauma center. In a typical day at Parkland, over 2200 people will be seen in one of over 160 primary care and specialty clinics.
Over 1200 house staff are currently completing training programs at Parkland Hospital. The medical school strongly supports the internship and residency programs, and an excellent, mutually beneficial working relationship exists between Parkland and UT Southwestern. Indeed, the quality of the house staff at Parkland is widely regarded as one of the strengths of the medical school.
The Department of Radiology at Parkland Hospital presently performs approximately 250,000 radiographic examinations per year. The department's 50,000-square-foot physical plant houses state-of-the-art modalities for all divisions of Radiology including digital imaging fluroscopic suites, interventional suites, spiral CT, magnetic resonance, ultrasound, mammography, and nuclear medicine. Satellite x-ray facilities are also located in the outpatient clinics. An updated radiology information system (RIS) was installed in 2002 and a PACS image storage and retrieval system was installed in 2003. The department has just completed a major renovation project, including the replacement of all major equipment. Currently, there are 45 residents rotating each month at Parkland.
Veterans Affairs Medical Center

The Veterans Affairs Medical Center is a 350 bed facility. Approximately 192,000 diagnostic x-ray examinations are performed each year in the Department of Radiology. Nuclear medicine at the VA is housed in a separate facility where more than 5,000 studies are performed each year. The VA is now filmless, having converted the entire department to PACS (picture archiving system) in 2000.
Ten residents per month are assigned to the VA where residents complete approximately 20% of their training. The experience and pathology encountered at the VA provide a valuable complement to the resident's training at Parkland.
Children's Medical Center Dallas

Children's Medical Center Dallas, a private facility with 300 beds, is contiguous to Parkland Memorial Hospital. Children's Medical Center Dallas is a regional referral center whose progressive leadership has considerably expanded its facilities and programs in recent years. Seven pediatric radiologists, two fellows, and three residents staff the Radiology Department. All equipment has been recently updated. This busy service provides a complete range of radiographic procedures, including special procedures, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, CT scanning, and magnetic resonance imaging. The entire department was converted to PACS during 2000-2001 and, like the VA, is now filmless. Approximately 50,000 examinations are performed annually, offering a wide variety of pediatric pathology to the radiology resident.
University Hospital-Zale Lipshy

The 152-bed facility on the South Campus is adjacent to Parkland. Faculty physicians provide diagnostic neurological services and treatments, including stroke patient care, primarily at Zale Lipshy as well as ophthalmology, oral surgery, psychiatric and other services.
General internal medicine and surgery services are offered at both sites as well as breast care, gastroenterology, geriatric services, head and neck surgery, nephrology, surgical oncology, vascular surgery, radiology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation.
