  • To develop a strong background in pediatric critical care medicine emphasizing the pathophysiology and management of life-threatening pediatric illnesses.
  • To develop clinical expertise in the care of critically ill infants and children.
  • To develop expertise in multidisciplinary care concepts for critically ill children, particularly those requiring long term critical care, including use of technological devices, development of complex discharge planning, and overseeing family needs during crises.
  • To familiarize trainees with the difficult ethical questions that arise in caring for critically ill and injured children.
  • To develop original lines of clinical and/or basic science research.
  • To develop expertise at organization, analysis, preparation and presentation of data.
  • To develop teaching skills for both the informal and formal presentation of material.
  • To develop expertise in the organizational and administrative skills necessary for the development and/or ongoing management of a multidisciplinary pediatric critical care unit.
  • To train physicians for academic careers.
