Cytogenetics Technologist II

The Division of Genetic Diagnostics in the McDermott Center for Human Growth and Development at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is seeking a candidate to work with academic clinicians, physician scientists and community physicians in a clinical genetics reference laboratory within an academic environment.

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS:
1.       Bachelor's degree in biology, medical technology, or other physical or natural science or related field required; AND 2.      Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in Cytogenetics by National Certifying Agency for Medical Laboratory Personnel.

EXPERIENCE:
1.              Minimum of 3 years cytogenetic experience that includes two (2) years on-the-job-training in cytogenetics and at least one (1) year clinical laboratory experience.

DUTIES:
Collects and prepares biological specimens for cytogenetic analyses from various human tissues utilizing aseptic technique.  Accurately records patient demographics and specimen information into the laboratory accessioning system. Appropriately initiates cultures and monitors for cell growth.  Harvests cell cultures using techniques, such as mitotic arrestants, cell releasing agents, cell fixatives, etc.  Prepares microscopic slides using routine banding techniques and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH).  Analyzes chromosome preparations, selecting cells, counting and analyzing each under the microscope.  Prepares karyotypes and FISH images as indicated per case.  Summarizes results of analyses and submits file to Lab Director for final report.  Operates and maintains microscopes and imaging systems to analyze karyotypes and print appropriate images from each case.  Instructs trainees, fellows, medical students, etc., in basic cytogenetic skills as required.  Participates in conferences and other educational activities to further knowledge of cytogenetics.  Maintains labware, laboratory equipment and supplies.  Collaborates with the Lab Director or other research personnel in the preparation of scientific papers for publication.  Performs other duties as assigned.

SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Proficiency with the cytogenetic evaluation of clinical specimens submitted for neoplastic (cancer) indications.

OTHER:
Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet job milestones.  Strong desire to work in a focused and productive manner.  A strong work ethic, ability to work within a team.  A friendly and cooperative attitude is a must.
