Description of Program
UT Southwestern's Minimally Invasive Urology Fellowship (MIS) is a one-year program designed for post-residency specialty training. Time commitment during the fellowship is approximately 80% clinical and 20% research. A high volume of endourology/stone and laparoscopic cases, as well as access to state-of-the-art animal and technical skills laboratories, attracts top candidates.
Clinical training encompasses all aspects of endourology, laparoscopy and SWL with regard to both patient care and clinical research. Laboratory research efforts focus primarily on minimally invasive surgery and endourology. Additionally, there is an opportunity to design and actively participate in metabolic stone studies through the Mineral Metabolism Center and General Clinical Research Center, in conjunction with Dr. Charles Pak and Dr. Margaret Pearle.
Clinical Case Load
Percutaneous procedures, 100/year
Ureteroscopic procedures, 100/year
SWL procedures, 100/year
Laparoscopic procedures, 150/year
Clinical Program
The endourology program is supervised by Dr. Margaret Pearle and Dr. Yair Lotan, and the laparoscopic program is supervised by Dr. Jeffrey Cadeddu and Dr. Yair Lotan. Clinical training takes place at Zale Lipshy University Hospital, Parkland Memorial Hospital and the Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center. On alternating Tuesdays, the fellow supervises the Parkland Urology Clinic and staffs shock wave lithotripsy cases. One day a week is dedicated to research activities.
Research Programs
Active laboratory research programs focus on the development of new laparoscopic surgical techniques and the evaluation of new technologies. Surgical education and evaluation as it pertains to laparoscopy and endourology is also a major research focus. Currently, the department serves as a beta test site for evaluation of a virtual reality ureteroscopy and percutaneous access simulator.
Bench space and Animal Lab Facilities:
Approximately 160 linear feet of bench space, 200 square feet of office space and 600 square feet for a research surgery suite are available to the fellow. In addition, a full-time endourology laboratory technician is employed by our section to assist in research endeavors.
